Le Montmartre
montmartregevel.jpg (7405 bytes)Halvemaansteeg 17     +31 (0)20 625 55 65

Another exuberant bar in the crowded Amstel area. Like elsewhere in this area, the same combination of camp Dutch sing-a-long and chart music. Small dance floor, great light effects. Happy hour from 6pm until 8pm.

Open 5 pm-1 am (weekends till 4 am).

f

The Queen's Head
gZeedijk 20          +31 (0)20 420 24 75

Popular bar owned by drag queen Dusty and partner Johan. Kitsch 'traditional dutch' interior in a old canal house, with a beautiful view of a major canal junction in the Red Light area. Every Tuesday Dusty hosts her famous bingo nights.

Open 4 pm-1 am (3 am on weekends).

f

Saarein
gElandsstraat 119       +31 (0)20 623 49 01

One of the oldest bars in Amsterdam. Used to be the sole women-only bar in Amsterdam, but under new ownership Saarein recently started admitting men. The long history of the bar is reflected in its beautiful interior, much of it dating from the seventeenth century.

Open 4 pm-1 am (weekends 2 am) - Sat noon-2 am, closed Mon.

f

Sappho
Vijzelstraat 103        +31 (0)20 423 15 09

g Amsterdam's best known dyke bar features regular shows and performances, like open mic nights and comedy clubs. Usually this is quite a relaxed place but the big banger is the Friday Dance Night, which gets the place packed. The Friday dance is women's night, so men only get in accompanied by a woman.

Open Tue-Thu 6 pm-1 am, Fri-Sat 8 pm-3 am.

f

Soho
Reguliersdwarstraat 36       +31 (0)20 422 33 12g

One of the more recent additions to the gay hangouts on the Reguliersdwarstraat, in the style of a traditional English pub, with lots of wood, comfortable chairs and period lighting. Gets crowded quick and can get a little intimidating, like most other gay hotspots on this street. DJ's during the weekend.

Open 6 pm-1 am (3 am weekends), Sun 4 pm-1 am.

f

Vive la Vie
Amstelstraat 7            +31 (0)20 624 01 14

vivelaviegevel.jpg (7677 bytes)Another crowded, bustling gay bar in the Amstel area, catering to a mainly female public, though men are welcome. Art-Deco style interior, and a nice outside terrace with a good view of Rembrandtplein. Vive la Vie is famous for the - lesbian - parties that are hosted throughout the year.

Open 4 pm-3 am, 1 pm-4 am weekends.

f

Amstel 54
amsteltaveernegevel.jpg (7408 bytes)Amstel 54             +31 (0)20 623 42 54

Continuation of The Amstel Taveerne, the first gay bar in the Amstel area. Judging by the large - mixed - crowds it attracts, it's still very popular. Especially pleasant during summer when everyone spills out onto the sidewalk lining the Amstel river. Be prepared for some camp Dutch sing-a-long.

Open daily 4 pm-1 am (weekends till 3 am).

f

April
Reguliersdwarsstraat 37           +31 (0)20 625 95 72

Large, relaxed gay bar with a modern black-and-white interior, and eye-catching tribal design ceiling panels. The revolving bar of yesteryear might have been replaced by a large rectangular 'island' bar, but it's the same gay sexy crowd waiting for the Shuffle Bubble happy hour. On warm summer days the party continues on the sidewalk.

Open daily 2 pm-1 am (2 am on weekends)

f

ARC
Reguliersdwarstraat 44    +31 (0)20 689 70 70

Right in the middle of the popular Reguliersdwarsstraat bar ARC is a large three-in-one. It is a grand cafe during the day, where you can have a late breakfast, lunch, sip a coffee and read the papers. In the evening ARC is a restaurant, and as the kitchen closes the reading table folds into the floor to create a dance floor, and ARC becomes a trendy bar. More women then you would expect, maybe due to the well lit interior, as opposed to the dusky atmosphere of some of the surrounding gay bars.

Open daily 4 pm-1 am (3am on weekends).

f

Downtown

Reguliersdwarsstraat 31      +31 (0)20 622 9958

Small split-level gay bar with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Good, inexpensive food and snacks with a large selection of (English) magazines and newspapers. Attractive sidewalk terrace during summer.

Open daily 10 am-8 pm.

f

Entre Nous
Halvemaansteeg 14        +31 (0)20 623 17 00

As gay bars in the Rembrandtplein area go this is a lively place with a young and boisterous crowd. Brush up on your Eurovision Songfestival lyrics! Don't show up to early if you want to be in the thick of the action, this is a night bar so it tends to get busy after the surrounding bars close.

Open daily 9 pm-3/4 pm, Sun 3 pm-3 am.

f

Exit
Reguliersdwarsstraat 42      +31 (0)20 625 87 88

A slick gay club - predominantly male though women admitted - on three levels with a comfortable bar and a large dance floor overlooked by a balcony. Caters to a trendy young public, and can get cruisey on weekends. Exit has a high-tech interior and a light show to match.

Open Fri-Sat 11 pm-5 am.

f

Getto
Warmoesstraat 51         +31 (0)20 421 51 51

Trendy bar-restaurant Getto with its fabulous kitsch interior has a more intimate restaurant area at the back and a hip bar at the front. Delicious meals include some great vegetarian dishes. Friendly atmosphere. Cocktail happy hour from 5pm to 7pm, DJ's during the weekends.

Open 4 pm-1 am,   closed on Mon.

f

Lellebel
Utrechtsestraat 4        +31 (0)20 427 51 39

Close to the Rembrandtplein, Lellebel is Amsterdam's most popular drag bar. During the weekend you can expect performances by the likes of Desiree Dello Stiletto and Babette Lafayatte. Happy hour on Sunday from 8pm to 10pm.

Open 9 pm-3 am (4 am on weekends). Sun 3 pm-3 am.

f

Le Monde
Rembrandtplein 6        +31 (0)20 626 99 22

One of the popular gay haunts, right on Rembrandt square. Maybe not the most sophisticated, but it's open all day, and it's a good place for breakfast and lunch as well as dinner.

Open daily 8 am-1 am (2 am on weekends).
