SAIL Amsterdam
The first steps towards organizing
SAIL Amsterdam 700, which
was held in 1975, were taken
during preparations for
the celebration of Amsterdam’s
700th anniversary. During
these preparations, it was
proposed to org anise a nautical
event in Amsterdam harbor,
which would be centered on
the harbor and the city of
Amsterdam. For the ‘Sail
Amsterdam 700’ event,
sailing ships from all over
the world were invited and
the event was a huge success.
Following the big
success of Sail Amsterdam 700,
it was decided to organize another
SAIL Amsterdam in 1980. In order
to steer the organization in the
right direction, the Sail Amsterdam
Foundation (SSA) was set up as
a permanent organization in 1975.
Ever since then, the SSA has successfully
organized a SAIL Amsterdam event
in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005
SAIL Amsterdam
Amsterdam
was the home port to one
of the biggest maritime events
in the world for the seventh
time in 2005, SAIL Amsterdam 2005. For
six days, Amsterdam was a
vibrant exhibition of historic
ships and nautical heritage.
During SAIL Amsterdam 2005, about
20 Tall Ships were in
Amsterdam harbor, together with
500 historic sailing and motorboats.
SAIL
events attract
Tall Ships from around the world.
This means that, apart from a number
of Dutch Tall Ships, you have
a chance to admire impressive windjammers
from countries such as Australia,
Brazil, Norway, Romania, Russia
and the Ukraine at the harbor.
In addition to the Tall Ships,
hundreds of classic sailing and
motorboats will participate in
SAIL Amsterdam. These historic
ships dock at the Oosterdok
and the Aquarena, west of the Verbindingsdam.
World of Friendships
However, SAIL is much
more than just watching ships,
taking in the atmosphere and enjoying
surprising encounters. SAIL
bings bring together worlds and
people in every sense and will
be a special event with a social
relevance, as the driving forces
behind SAIL are tolerance, understanding
and friendship.
Through its program
of events, activities and communications,
SAIL always brings Amsterdam
truly alive:
* the maritime link between past,
present and future;
* the link between worlds and cultures;
* the role of young people.
The overall motto that unites
these three areas is ‘Enjoy
a world of friendships’. |
