Have a drink? ...the choices can be staggering
Eetcafés - Brown Cafés - Lounges - Grand Cafés Traditional Coffee Houses' - Pubs - Bars- Clubs

To give an accurate description and review .. we visit every establishment on our list ...to assure accuracy.
" We do love or work."

What Is the actual difference between a Brown Café, an Eetcafé and a Restaurant?

A brown café is similar to a pub, an eetcafé offers bistro-like fare, with an expanded food and drink menu. A grand café is a more sophisticated and larger than an eetcafé ...usually with many outside tables. A restaurant could include any of these aformentioned aspects, or it could be a fine dining establishment.

Amsterdam's Grand Cafe's are everywhere...

Some are tiny spots pushing back the passing parade, just enough to find the air, and a sliver of sunshine.

...they all are "Grand" when the weather cooperates.Cafes in the grand tradition of Paris, Vienna, and Rome, with lots of style, ambiance, and balconies or terraces -- they're see-and-be-seen kind of places. Grand cafes are distinguished by their emphasis on food and drink, architecture, production values, and style. Some grand cafes are truly grand.

Be aware that there are others that use the name even though they may not be particularly impressive--the definition is an elusive one, merging into restaurants with terraces at one end and more-or-less ordinary cafes with seats outside at the other.

Panama
Oostelijke Handelskade 4         +31 (0) 20 311 86 86

PanamaHoused in a former Port Authority building slightly out of city center in the popular Docklands area, Panama combines a bar, a restaurant and a hip club/theatre. The restaurant itself is a roomy affair, with large windows, high ceilings and subdued stylish decoration, though service can be a bit lackluster. The club has a varied program during the weekends, and the nice outdoor terrace deserves a special mention.

Open daily 11 a.m. - 1 a.m.

f

Rain
Rembrandtplein 44       +31 (0) 20 626 70 78

RainHip club-bar-restaurant, with a tasteful interior with lots of dark wood and bamboo. Downstairs is cocktail bar and dance floor, with right behind the bar the Comfortable Dining Area, where you can enjoy a snack or a light meal. Upstairs is the Main Dining Room, with a fashionable East-meets-West style international cuisine. Loungy, jazzy tunes on weekdays, during the weekend the music picks up a little with a bit of hip-hop and house thrown in.

Open daily 6 p.m. - 2 a.m. - 4 a.m. weekends

f

Supper Club
Jonge Roelensteeg 21       +31 (0) 20 344 64 00

Supper Club Lounge AmsterdamA trendy three-in-one; restaurant, bar and lounge. The downstairs bar is entirely done up in red, and the lounge is overwhelmingly white (think milkbar from Clockwork Orange). Apart from being the most popular days, Fridays and Saturdays are also the most spectacular with live music and DJ's.

Open daily 8 p.m. - closing

f

Wolvenstraat 23
Wolvenstraat Bar AmsterdamWolvenstraat 23       +31 (0) 20 320 08 43

Hip city center bar, good for breakfast, lunch, dinner and general lounging. Appropriate '70s meets the new century' decor and tunes, with a public to match. The eats are mostly Asian in origin, with the usual modern twist of course.

Open daily 8 a.m. - 1 a.m. -- 9 a.m. - 2 a.m.  weekends

f

Zebra Lounge
Korte Leidse Dwarsstraat 14       +31 (0) 20 489 55 00

Zebra Lounge AmsterdamControversial but stylish club near the Leidseplein. The Zebra Lounge was the first bar in Amsterdam to stage pole dancers. The poles had to go, but the dancers remain. Two dance floors, several bars and the availability of private booths create a luxurious and exclusive atmosphere. If you want a private booth you'll have to make advance reservations.

Open Wed-Sun 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.  --  3 a.m. weekends

f

ARC
Reguliersdwarstraat 44   +31 (0) 20 689 70 70

ARC bar AmsterdamRight in the middle of the popular Reguliersdwarsstraat bar ARC is a large three-in-one. It is a grand cafe during the day, where you can have a late breakfast, lunch, sip a coffee and read the papers. In the evening ARC is a restaurant, and as the kitchen closes the reading table folds into the floor to create a dance floor, and ARC becomes a trendy bar. Predominantly gay public.

Open daily 10 a.m. - 1 a.m.  --  3 a.m. weekends

f

NL
Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 169        +31 (0) 20 622 75 10

© Sjoerd van Luijn Think old fashioned nightclub, with comfortable plush seats and velvet draperies, all in red of course, and appropriate soft lighting. DJ's during the weekend, so the more adventurous can dance in between the loungers. Thai snacks on order, prepared by Rakang and served on a plate so that you can enjoy while remaining comfortably seated. Expect to queue.

Open daily 10 p.m. - 3 a.m.

f

MOMO
Hobbemastraat 1        +31 (0) 20 671 74 74

MOMO restaurant-bar-lounge Amsterdam Hip restaurant-bar-lounge close to Leidseplein with attractive cosmopolitan interior design. The menu is loosely based on the Asian cuisine: think sushi, crispy duck and lots of teriyaki sauce. The 'shared-dining' concept means you get served what's ready, which is then placed in the middle of the table for all to enjoy. There's no telling who will get what and when though, which can get a bit annoying. The menu is a bit on the expensive side as well, so overall do not go here for the food so much as to see and be seen.

Open daily 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

  f
Nomads
Rozengracht 133      +31 (0) 20 344 64 01

Nomads Another hip restaurant from team Supper Club, this time done up like a scene from Arabian Nights. In tried-and-true Supper Club fashion dinner is had lying down, and it's the 'see-and-be-seen' what really makes this place tick. If you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of a belly dancer. A good place for a pre-club dinner of course, but a little on the expensive side.

Open daily 7 p.m. - 1 a.m. --  3 a.m. weekends
kitchen open until 11 p.m.

 f
Odessa
Veemkade 259       +31 (0) 20 419 30 10

Odessa Club AmsterdamSomething special, this barge converted to restaurant-cum-club. The Odessa is moored in the hip Docklands area, and on this boat it's the 'va-et-vient' that counts, you probably wouldn't want to make the trek out of city center on the merits of the food alone. Informal staff and a laid-back atmosphere, with DJ's during the weekends.

Open Wed. -Thu. 4 p.m. - 1 a.m.  - Sat. - Sun. 4 p.m. - 3 a.m.

De Admiraal
Herengracht 319       +31 (0) 20 625 43 34

De Admiraal tasting house AmsterdamA 'proeflokaal' (tasting house) where you can sample the liquors of Van Wees, the last of Amsterdam's independent distilleries. Museum-like interior with lots of brewery utensils. Not exactly true to tasting house style, De Admiraal stays open until late in the evening, and if you stay that long you will be pleased to know there are comfortable sofas and armchairs. Wonderful outdoor patio.

Open 4:30 p.m. - 12 p.m. - closed Sunday

 f

Eik En Linde
Plantage Middenlaan 22      +31 (0) 20 622 57 16

Eik En Linde Dutch brown Bar AmsterdamArchetypical Dutch 'brown' bar, a favorite among locals. The history of Eik en Linde goes back as far as 1858, and the walls are plastered with historical drawings and photographs. Beware of the clock behind the bar which runs backwards; although truly confusing this still might be considered a lame excuse.

Open 11  a.m. - 1 a.m. - 2 a.m. -- 1 p.m. - 2 a.m. weekends

f

Hoppe
Spui 18-20       +31 (0) 20 420 44 20

Hoppe Bar AmsterdamA famous Amsterdam institution, Hoppe consists of two adjoining properties. The part on the right has been a bar since 1670, the interior reflecting its rich history. The sand on the floor is refreshed daily, no music is played and there is standing room only. The left part is bigger and offers seating as well as music. Hoppe is a very popular bar with the crowd spilling out onto the sidewalk on summer days. During happy hour it fills up with expensive suits on the way home from the office.

Open 8 a.m. - 1 a.m. -- 2 a.m. weekends

f

Int Aepjen
Zeedijk 1      +31 (0) 20 626 84 01

Int Aepjen oldes bar in AmsterdamOne of the oldest bars in Amsterdam, housed in the only remaining 15th-century home, heavily decorated with old toys and advertising materials. 'Aepjen' means monkey, which refers to the time this was a sailors lodging house. A guest couldn't pay his bill, and he supposedly brought back a monkey on the next trip. No music, but a accordionist during weekends to guide the regulars during their sing-a-longs.

Open 3 p.m. - 1 a.m. -- 3 a.m. weekends

 f

't Loosje
't Loosje old brown bar AmsterdamNieuwmarkt 32-34         +31 (0) 20 627 26 35

f

Het Molenpad
Prinsengracht 653      +31 (0) 20 625 96 80

Het Molenpad brown cafe Amsterdam Archetypical 'brown' cafe, with a bit of an arty atmosphere, maybe due to Amsterdam's main library being just around the corner. Pretty decent kitchen serves lunch and dinner, and lovely snack plates to go with your appetizer. Beautiful canal side terrace with limited space though, so you might have to wait it out a bit.

Open daily noon - 1 a.m. -- 2 a.m. weekends

 f

Nol
Westerstraat 109        +31 (0) 20 624 53 80

nol gevel bar Jordaan AmsterdamVery popular bar in true over-the-top Jordaan style: red lights, crystal chandeliers, floral wallpaper and of course loud Dutch evergreens, which the crowd sings along to at the top of their voices. Always packed, especially during weekends. Popular with locals and boisterous students alike.

Open 9 p.m. - 3 a.m. -- 4 a.m. weekends

f

De Pieper
Prinsengracht 424         +31 (0) 20 626 47 75

One of the oldest brown bars in town dating back to 1665 Amsterdam One of the oldest brown bars in town dating back to 1665, and with lots of the original furnishings still in place, like the stained glass windows and the sand covered wooden flooring. Lovely but smallish outside terrace overlooking a beautiful part of Prinsengracht canal.

Open daily 11 a.m. - 1 a.m. -- 3 a.m. weekends

f

Reijnders
Leidseplein 6       +31 (0) 20 623 44 19

Reijnders brown bar AmsterdamOne of the best bets in the tourist Leidseplein area is this authentic brown bar. It used to be the literary centre of the Leidseplein, together with the neighboring cafe Eylders. Elegant, high-ceiling interior and waiters clad in traditional black-and-white. The glassed-in front opens during the summer to create a sunny outside terrace.

Open daily 9 a.m. - 1 a.m. --  3 a.m. weekends

f

't Smalle
Egelantiersgracht 12       +31 (0) 20 623 96 17

't Smalle Hoppe gin distillery dating from 1786 in Amsterdam A former 'proeflokaal' (tasting house) for the nearby Hoppe gin distillery dating from 1786. The beautifully restored interior certainly makes this bar worth a visit, but the main attraction has to be the large waterside terrace on the relatively quiet Egelantiersgracht canal. Possibility to moor your boat, if you're so inclined.

Open daily 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. -- 2 a.m. weekends

f

Thijssen
Brouwersgracht 107      +31 (0) 20 623 89 94

Thijssen Large bar in the Jordaan AmsterdamLarge bar in the Jordaan, catering to young locals. Though of more recent date then the neighboring bars, it already has managed to acquire a nice 'brown' patina. The large windows provide a good view of one of the most beautiful parts of the Jordaan. Gets crowded during evenings.

Open 9:30 a.m.  - 1 a.m.  -- 3 a.m. weekends

f
