Amsterdam Average Marijuana & Hash Price Quote

70 million

George Washington routinely smoked marijuana to alleviate the pain from his ailing teeth. Washington's own diary recounts, on several occasions, his efforts to better cultivate and enhance his crops of marijuana, which he used both for hemp (fiber) production and for medicine: May 12–13, 1765: "Sowed Hemp at Muddy hole by Swamp." August 7, 1765: ". . ."began to separate (sic) the Male from the Female Hemp ..but rather too late."

News and Editorial:

The Netherlands' famous coffee shops, where marijuana is available over the counter, face the threat of extinction when the country goes smoke-free on July 1, 2009.

Smoking dope is the raison d'être of the cafes which are scattered across the country, with the greatest and most famous concentration in Amsterdam. But when the tobacco ban comes in, the coffee shops will not be exempt...

Amsterdam has by far the most number of coffeshops in the Netherlands. Amsterdam's progressive policy regarding the legal consumption of high quality weed and hash is common knowledge.

The Dutch Government's long standing and popular weed and hash policy with regards to the sale and use by free citizens is again being attacked by the conservatives, Christian Right, and other narrow-minded powers that now are in control.  (a favorite Dutch word is CONTROL)

There is no cannabis violence or any otherwise discernable problem with cannabis in Holland. In fact, coffeeshops and canabiscafe's cannabis/alcohol bars are at the bottom of trouble spots for the Police ...if you talk to the cops on the beat like we have.

Being  a regular visitor to hundreds of places all over the city I never have even heard of a problem with out of control smokers...it just doesn't happen. Bars and lounges with alcohol only are the hot trouble spots all over the planet ..not just Holland. The big public concern is centered around the strength (THC content) of the Neder-weed (Home grown Dutch skunk.)

THC has definitely increased but you can smoke a little less and get the effects for less money. As for Hashish.. Hash is Hash and has been relatively strong stuff since I was a kid (A VERY LONG TIME AGO).

Shop owners and consumers are again struggling to find a way to once and for all reach a real legalization status solution in the Netherlands.

Dutch coffee shops introduce fingerprint ID
Dope testing
By Jan Libbenga

Some Dutch coffee shops, which sell marijuana in small quantities for personal use, are introducing fingerprinting technology to check the age of customers.

The shops are not allowed to sell to anyone under the age of 18. Coffee shops currently require photographic ID for proof of age.
The first coffee shops to use turnstiles with built-in fingerprint sensors are Inpetto in Rotterdam, Birdy in Haarlem, and 't Rotterdammertje in Doetinchem in the east of the country. Customers must first register with the shops, but personal details will not be stored.

The technology has been developed by FingerIdent, a company owned by Gerrie Mansur, one of the members of legendary Dutch hacking group Hit2000. According to Mansur, the system can match 35,000 fingerprints in less than a second. ®

Some smoking basics:

Amsterdam's progressive policy of the legal availability of high quality weed and hash is common knowledge.

If it's your first time in one of our Dutch cannabis Coffeeshops don't be shy just ask for a menu. It should include a variety of cannabis buds and hash, ranging in quality from  just OK to incredibly good tasting stuff.

Price is not always connected to flavor but usually is reflected in the THC content. As in most things the more you pay the better the product ...but there is always the exception

Feel free to ask questions, the staff are typically quite friendly. You may also want to ask if they have a pipe or bong to use. Rolling papers and filter tips are available as well. Take the time to learn how the Dutch role a joint. A great way to make new friends especially if you give the teacher a joint or drink free for the lesson.

Some of the most touristy of places can be the best place to get good reliable info if you are a novice smoker. These places are simply used to all the questions. We have encountered local neighborhood places can be a little put off having to explain things in English. Some won't even be bothered but most DUTCH places are welcoming and appreciative of your business.

The average price of a small bag runs approximately € 10-15 (ten $ US). A "dime bag" is typically about half a gram.

Yes! The stuff is good, not illegal AND CHEAP TOO! Some places offer pre-rolled joints of pure grass or grass and hash joints mixed with tobacco.

You are allowed to bring grass from one Coffeeshop to another, just be sure to purchase something to drink.

Smoking outside in public is generally ok just don't be blatant about it.

Psychoactive Drugs Information
information that could save your life!

f

Space-cakes:

Some Coffeeshops offer space-cakes as a good alternative to smoking. These are cookies, brownies or cake, with hash or pure TCH in them.

Most of the better shops did a great job and may even tell you the most important part, The secret is, an even distribution of the hash in the cake for obvious reasons.

A lot of places had slopped selling space cakes in recent years unfortunately. The government had stopped them because of the imprecise and inconsistent strength of each individual piece of cake. This problem was found at a relative few careless shops.

New rules have been set up to "Control" the contents of space cakes and other baked cannabis products. Ask your favorite shop I they are participating. More shops are again offering space cakes with better control and procedures in place.

The better the hash the better the  space. The better the cake the better the whole experience.

MOMS BEST CAKE
In the 1960's my mom was the food editor for a major NY News magazine and was requested to Develop a chocolate cake desert recipe for a famous New York Restaurant, She did and it is still on the menu to this day. (minus the hash of coarse)

If you would like my mothers SPECIAL recipe, E-mail me and make sure that "hash pound cake recipe" is in the subject line.

If you try your own style be patient, and don't go crazy, give it time to work. Some hash can pack quite a punch but it may not really hit you for an hour or two.

REVIEW AND RATING PROCESS

f

There are some 300 licensed coffeeshops in Amsterdam. An additional 75 or more are bar/coffeeshops known as cannabiscafés have been in the mix but things are changing, Canabiscafe's have now been forced to make a decision to either sell beer and booze or weed. Thay can't sell both in the same place.

This reality hits you when you are finally here. We want you to have as much fun as we have in Amsterdam... we tell you which are worth a visit and the "popular places" that should be avoided.

Oue Experience Amsterdam Review and comments on each coffeeshop is a reflection of experiences of our own, our guests, our visitors, and friends, that have been had at each shop. We also try to describe the place a little.

Needles to say ...but I must, "what we like, and what another person likes, can be, and often is, light-years apart."

We constantly get e-mail from visitors describing their good and bad experiences. We appreciate the input and opinions and take them into account. After all is said and done, the experience you have is the most important experience.

Reviews and Ratings:  How we rate a coffeeshop experience. Our goal has always been to get you the best insightful information on a place. To be fair to the shops and customers alike we try to get under the surface ...to the feeling a place gives us rather than to what the weed tasted like, how potent the smoke is, how stoned you get, or even how cold the drinks were.

Weed quality and potencey changes often ...sometimes with every crop ...so to rate any Shop based on the quality of a joint or one bag of weed we may get on any given visit is pointless and irelivent in an overall "shop veview".

There are many "toke by toke" weed reviews online from visitors to shops on many other Shop List Review Websites to check out. We do appreciate reading about these experiences as well and do keep ourselves informed of reviews on gear quality.

Our RATING and review is based on the combination of everything we know and have heard about a place usually over a long perod of time and put into a simple basic statement. The ultimate experience we are in surch of is one that the Dutch describe as being "gezellig"

GEZELLIG

What does "gezellig" mean?   Not an easliy explained word. Gezellig is the single Dutch word which describes "the feeling or ambiance that makes a place warm, cozy, friendly, and welcoming."

So gezellig can be "..anyplace at any time ..like sitting with your lover holding hands, on a park bench in the sunshine, at the quiet place on the canal, and being at peace with the world. Then some ducks float by with their baby chicks and the birds are singing and you really feel great."...you get the idea...

Just a little walk down the street ("Korte-leidsedwarsstraat") to the East > (right) from the Burger King that's on the Leidseplein. Rookies is on the left, in the center of the second block.

"Rookies" is a friendly place to have a drink, a chat, while having a more engaging coffeshop experience with a pool table and table games.

The fun loving owners designed the furniture and interior themselves and were inspired by art deco. The music is played loud enough to enjoy the great sound system but soft enough to hear the one you are talking to. It is a friendly Coffeeshop with a relaxed atmosphere and with clean air, where people can feel at home. The assortment of drinks is extensive.

Occasionally there are theme-parties, ...for example, a night dedicated to the hippie-era. A party for the wedding of the Crown Prince Willim and his charming bride Maxima.

Visitors include a mix of students, local people, and tourists of all ages from all Earth's country's. ...We suspect some interplanetary visitors have been through here as well

You will be lucky to get a table here no matter what time of day you visit. But it is most definitely worth the effort! This shop is small, dimly lit, traditional, and very, very popular. A truly classic Dutch coffeeshop that has made its reputation as a "locals cafe' first" and then by word of mouth has been found by visitors far and wide. The specialty of the house is a HUGE MENU of high quality foreign hashish. The weed menu is equally extensive and also the quality is first class. Tweedy Kammer proves the adage that if you are good people will find you.

Take a #.1 or 2 Tram to "Spui" (pronounced "Spouw") keep on the right hand side of the road, walk around the corner into Spuistraat, look across the road and you will see a little alley between a restaurant and other shops, this is Heisteeg, Tweede Kamer is in the center of this short block on the right side.

Address: Vijzelgracht 33 (Located just off the Prinsengracht)

"The first coffeeshop in Amsterdam ever", is their claim. Several others lie claim to the same fame. Our research shows Mellow Yellow was certainly "One of the first" that was started back in 1970s, along with a few others ..seemingly all at about the same time. "Mello" is still a basically Dutch place and a little break from the packed to the rafters tourist places in the Red Light District, but it is still popular with the tourists and they do search it out. Hard for us to chill with all the commotion.

Hasn't been redecorated since it's beginning days it seems like but still worth a look. Some have accused the staff of being a little snooty but we are always treated like we are customers ...with respect.  One can't argue with the weed and hash quality ..and the coffee is standard Amsterdam good quality.

Another one of the oldest coffeeshops in town and another of our favorite coffeeshops. I have spent many days here ..winter and summer working on this website on my laptop... a great place to spend an entire day away from the tourist routine in the center. There is a balcony-style upper level and a comfortable terrace. Loacated right in front of the University of Amsterdam, so you can find many students chilling at all times of the day also a great stop off before visiting the Artis Zoo with the "kids"

This is a very healthy coffee shop. Homemade soups, fresh fruits with ginseng are on the menu along with many other health promoting items. Toasties are also available.

Sister shop to Rusland, they have the same weed and drinks menu, including a super selection of tea on offer. So drop in and have a nice cup of tea and a killer joint as you get the chance to chat and mingle with native Amsterdamers. Get high and "get local" all at the same time.

Hunter’s has been one of my favorite haunts since I moved to Amsterdam over a decade ago. My first month here was spent in a local youth hostle which was indeed a tragic place...Met a lot of new local friends at Hunter's that helped me get established in my new city. Hunters will always have a special place in my heart.

Opens EARLY so if you want a morning joint this is the place. It used to be called Hunter's Bar, and was a cafe-coffeeshop, that is, a place where alcohol was available alongside cannabis. In April 2007 shops were forced to choose between alcohol and cannabis Hunters rallied ..and opened a Vodka bar close by. So if you want to smoke and drink your covered..you just need to take a short walk

Located right at the beginning of the Red Light district, this place can be a little touristy, however, the black interior gives a nice cozy lounge feel and there are ample chairs and couches to relax..

Staff is really friendly and the prices are somewhat cheaper than other shops in the area. They make great shakes, too. There’s no tobacco allowed here, but you can use the substitute they offer.  info@hunters-coffeeshop.com

(Formerly: Lucky Mothers)

Keizersgracht 665

The name still confuses us ..especially after an incoherent explanation by the bar girl. She must have been sampling the wares ...Close to Rembrandtplein. Here you will find a downstairs area. Marble tables and quartz crystals create a classic hippy atmosphere. Lucky Mothers has a vaporizer and an assortment of Graffix bongs to borrow, as well as a chill-out cellar, a room designed to feel like the inside of a genie bottle. a nice place and nice people to serve you!  The HempBurger was strange and quite tasteless but ...the menu has some other good choices to much on. Worth a look!

This shop is located a three-minute walk west of Dam Square, on a narrow lane near the Singel canal on the edge of the Jordaan. Good music and large picture window overlooking the sidewalk. They provide special Nederhashes and a some imported hashish. "The Coffee is now very good "...if you can find a seat, "smoke out" with the stoner owners!

ALWAYS GREAT SMOKE HERE ....ALWAYS Nice guys also!

We can't make our mind up with this place ..sometimes just ok ...sometimes the staff are really rude ..details...

Founded in 1982, this shop is close to Waterlooplein and Nieuwmarkt. It has two fairly small levels. The top level has some comfortable chairs. if you can find a seat. and the coffeeshop. The cannabis menu truly encompasses the world. There are more sorts of imported grass than you'll usually see in other places and a wide variety of hashish, They specialize in black hash and Moroccan. There is also an excellent variety of bio-weeds. Blue Bird won the Hashish Cup in 1995 with their Nepali Temple Balls.

You can't smoke on the patio outside and they are very rude telling you about it! Terrible coffee last time ...when I complained the coffee was cold and weak I was told "not to drink it" ...after finally getting a seat we found the seats were sticky ..when we asked for a wet rag to clean it up ...we got a role of the eyes and ...no towel.

Our best advice is ..if you must ...buy your choice of gear ..and then go have a lot more fun in the park!                 It's primarily the rudeness that compels us to say ..Keep Walking!

Homegrown Fantasy

Nice Coffeeshop, brightest place near the Dam, but seats fill up quickly! Recently. their bud selection has really picked up and their varieties are very nice quality. They also sell seeds. Highly rated by some but left us flat.

This Coffeeshop is on a side street off Leidsestraat just past Koningsplein, right across from Albert Heijn down the street a bit.

The only "OUT" gay coffeeshop in Amsterdam, It always has a really good mix of gay/straight, locals and tourists. It's very small (approx 25 seats). Usually plays dance/techno sounds, the grass here is really good, especially the Superskunk It's a fairly quiet simple place with some interesting, not seen before selections, plus some common buds. It's a nice place to stop for tea or a coffee. The perfect pink joint can be found in this bright, modern, friendly, great place!

This small, cozy, shop is located near Central Station. The shop serves all the standard munches, sodas, juice, coffee, and tea. A wide assortment of VERY GOOD cannabis and hashish is available and at decent prices. Many locals frequent the place and are usually an older crowd. I love the bright halogen light on the second floor's cannabis bar, which gives you an excellent light to examine the weed. A comfortable place to relax if not busy. A recent guest said "Wow I can't say enough good things about this "under dog" coffeeshop.

Sensi's Museum Coffeeshop

Oude Doelenstraat 20 - Tel. +31 (0)20-623-5267

Right around the corner from the Sensi Museum. Not particularly spectacular, but a good place to stop for a smoke after seeing the Museum. They only sell seeds so bring your own weed and hash.

Bulldog (lots of them in the area... Bulldog shops that is")

13-17 Leidseplein  - Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 45  - 132 Oudezijds Voorburgwal ...

The original Bulldog Coffeeshop is one of the oldest in Amsterdam, , Mostly a tourist rip off ...although admittedly a classic one. They have a pretty poor selection here, but plenty of outdoor seats. Watch out for the main floor Bulldog, they'll rip you off at every turn as prices are over the top!! The downstairs Coffeeshop on the right side of the building is better but not by much. Several "branch offices" have been opened at Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 45 and at several locations at 132 Oudezijds Voorburgwal and a couple more on the same street.     Keep Walking!

The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum

Hemp Museum

Since the opening in 1985 of the Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum in Amsterdam, almost a million interested people have visited this permanent exhibition. Each year, some 95,000 visitors from all parts of the world come to this exceptional centre of culture and knowledge, located at 148 Oudezijds Achterburgwal in the heart of the Red-Light District. As its name suggests, the Museum is dedicated to the cannabis plant and its many uses. The Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum is unique in the world, and offers a true voyage of discovery - one that fits perfectly with any visit to Amsterdam.

The scent of genuine cannabis plants welcomes the visitor when entering the Museum. Inside, all aspects of hemp, cannabis and hashish are explained in detail using a variety of media, including short films and photo collections. The Museum houses a large collection of traditional smoking devices from all over the world. There is also an extensive library of books, photos, posters, and magazines concerned with the culture of cannabis, which range from the 19th Century to the Jazz era and on to contemporary pop culture.

The Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum offers visitors extensive documentation and information about the historical and modern uses of the cannabis plant, as well as its medicinal, religious and cultural applications, not to mention cannabis‘ enormous potential to benefit the environment, agriculture and industry in the future. The Museum shows how hemp has evolved to become one of humanity‘s most valuable renewable resources.

Although cannabis is considered controversial in many places of the world, the Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum aims to provide an objective picture of this remarkable plant. It is to be expected that scientists will discover many more uses for the cannabis plant. At the museum, visitors will be able to gain a deeper insight into all of this, because a visit will bring a wealth of information. In the Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum, the past, present and future of the cannabis plant are merging together.
