the street there are two main types of green
telephone boxes: cash and phone-card.
Telephoning
from a hotel room is expensive. Buy a telephone
card almost everywhere these days. Cards
can be bought in various denominations from railway
stations, tobacconists, post offices and other
shops. They are good for long distance calls.
To
make an international call, you dial 00 followed
by your country code, then the national area code
leaving off an initial 0 and then the local number.
Many
countries have a "Call Direct" service,
where a free call in the Netherlands puts you in
touch with an operator in your own country where
you can then arrange a reversed-charge or credit
call. To dial these services, you dial 0800-022
and then a 4 digit code for the country you want.
A list of these codes are in the Amsterdam
Yellow Pages (`Gouden Gids').
There
are Internet public phone booths at
various places in the city, such as in the Spui,
by the Westerkerk, by the Van Gogh Museum
and Central Station. They cost about .50
Euro cents for 1+ minutes. You can use them
for Web access or sending e-mail, but not receiving
e-mail. You need a phone card to use them.
The best way by far to stay in touch now all over the planet is Skype. http://www.skype.com Download free and phone computer to computer for free. Many Internet cafe's now have Skype. If not ask them to load the easy to install and use program! Once you get to the program make your username ...remember it and you can log on and talk for free wherever you go.
